- What is a good profit margin? It depends on the industry. Retail often runs thin (5–15%), services higher. The trend matters more than the exact number.
- Is markup the same as margin? No. Markup is profit as a percentage of cost; margin is profit as a percentage of price.
- What is the difference between gross and net margin? Gross margin counts only direct product costs; net margin also subtracts overheads, taxes, and other expenses.
- How do I improve my margin? Raise prices carefully, reduce supply costs, or cut overheads. Each point of margin compounds.
What Is Profit Margin?
Profit margin is the percentage of your revenue that is profit. A 25% margin means that for every ₹100 in sales, ₹25 is profit after costs.
It matters because revenue alone tells you nothing about health. A business can sell a lot and still lose money. Margin is what shows whether each sale is worth making.
The Profit Margin Formulas
There are two common measures:
Gross profit margin
Gross margin = (Revenue − Cost of Goods Sold) ÷ Revenue × 100
Net profit margin
Net margin = (Revenue − All Expenses) ÷ Revenue × 100
Gross margin ignores overheads like rent and salaries; net margin includes everything.
A Worked Example
You sell a product for ₹1,000. Materials and fees cost ₹400.
- Gross profit = ₹1,000 − ₹400 = ₹600
- Gross margin = ₹600 ÷ ₹1,000 × 100 = 60%
If your monthly overheads are ₹200 per unit sold, net profit is ₹400 and net margin is 40%.

Why Margin Beats Revenue
| Business | Revenue | Margin | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-volume, thin | ₹10,00,000 | 5% | ₹50,000 |
| Low-volume, healthy | ₹2,00,000 | 40% | ₹80,000 |
The smaller business earns more. Margin is the number to defend.
